What you'll find with virtually every vampire story is some sort of romance. It's tied in as a part of the mythos in a way that cannot be divorced from the creatures themselves, and you get to see that in a major way in the Blood Queen video slot. This game's theme is a play on Van Helsing from the original Dracula novel and Mina Harker, who are represented by "Van Hell" and titular Blood Queen, respectively, as Mina was thought to be the reincarnation of Dracula's long lost love. The Gothic graphics in this game are interesting as well, and their spin on the source material is more effort than you normally see from these types of themes.

Game Format

You'll find 30 paylines that pay only from left to right in this game. There's a standard grid of five reels and three rows to contend with as well. All of the paylines are always activated, and you'll pick from total bet sizes that range from $0.30 to $60 per spin. There are plenty of other bet sizes to pick from between this minimum and maximum, and that makes it easy to find something that you're comfortable with.

Expanding Wild Gargoyle Symbols

In most slots, the wild is a regular symbol that can show up alongside the others on the reels. In this game, things are a bit different. Instead, you'll have stone gargoyles show up at random on the top spot of random reels. When they appear, they cover the whole reel in wild symbols, and you can get more than one on the reels at once. This is a different approach to wilds that works effectively like a standard expanding wild, but the way it appears is a bit different and really fits with the theme and presentation.

Free Spins Bonus Features

There's a heart symbol in this game that can show up on each reel, and it's a scattered bonus symbol. This symbol awards free spins for three or more anywhere on the reels, and it can really give you a lot of free chances to win. Three of a kind gets you 20 free spins, four of a kind is worth 30 free spins, and five of a kind gives you the maximum of 50 free spins. However, there are two different game modes for the bonus round that you should know about.

You can pick either Van Hell's expanding sticky wild (the blue vial) or the Blood Queen's shifting wild reel (the red vial). Whichever you pick is the extra feature that you will get during the free spins, and they amount to extra wilds that stay on the reels for a bit to give you more ways to get paid.

The main difference in the two starts with the holy water wild during the Van Hell feature. It expands to be a two-by-two set of symbols on the reels, and it expands over a couple of spins while staying sticky before disappearing. For the Blood Queen feature, you'll have this wild show up at the top of the middle three reels and expand. It'll shift left each spin until it leaves the left-hand side of the reels along these lines.

Top-level Payouts and Prizes

The two most important regular-paying symbols are for the Blood Queen and Van Hell. The queen symbol is in red, and she gives 1,000x for five of a kind, 200x for four of a kind and 30x for three. Van Hell is the other character symbol with a blue hat, jacket and background. He'll give you a slightly smaller 800x payout for five on a payline, and you can also earn 150x for four or 20x for three of this symbol.

Other Prizes and Combinations

Moving down the pay table, the set of red gems with gold trim gets you 600x for five of a kind. Five of the vampire face gets you a 400x payout as well, and you can also earn 200x for a pair of wooden stakes. At the bottom of the pay table, the red A symbol earns players 100x for five of a kind, and 80x and 50x wins are available for the green K and purple Q, respectively. Finally, you can get 40x for five of a kind combos of the blue J symbol.

Our Thoughts

The gameplay aspects of the Blood Queen slot by Iron Dog Studios are pretty strong, both from the pay table perspective and the feature set. The theme is done really well, and the features and symbols fit into it really well. The only thing resembling a weakness in this title is the graphics, and that's because they come across as somewhat flat and plain compared to other titles in the sub-genre. That's largely subjective, however, so this can definitely be a title that a lot of players can sink their teeth into.
